Background The Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship at the American Bible Society takes seriously its mission to engage with and deepen the fields of biblical scholarship and Bible translation. In addition to its operational initiatives in Bible translations projects, the Nida Institute also carries out its mission through ongoing activities that seek to advance the conversation between contemporary Translation Studies and Bible translation. These activities include convening scholarly conferences, as well as the creative use of its website, nidainstitute.org, as a means of promoting the exchange of information and ideas (e.g., publication of bibliographies, announcements of educational opportunities, and relevant background information on Translation Studies). On the strength of these commitments, the Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship cooperated from 2001 onwards with the Louvain-University based Centre for Communication, Translation, and Culture (CETRA), organizing the annual research and training seminar at Instituto San Pellegrino in Misano (Italy). From 2005 onwards this cooperation resulted in a formal Bible scholarship and translation track within CETRA. This track became the nucleus out of which the Nida School of Translation Studies was formed in 2007 as an independent summer seminar for research and training. Purpose The Nida School of Translation Studies, sponsored by the Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship, is an annual two-week seminar that brings together experts in the fields of both Translation Studies and Bible Translation, plus others from cognate disciplines. Each seminar is a critical exploration into translation theory, linguistics, semiotics and cultural studies as they pertain to a well-defined topic or problem, conducted by means of guided readings, participant-led discussions, and lectures. The special character of these seminars lies in their multi-disciplinary nature, allowing theorists and practitioners to develop new ways of thinking about their own fields of research while intersecting with others in cognate disciplines. The audience for the Nida School will comprise an international mix of academics who are engaged in post-doctoral research in these related fields, translation consultants of the UBS and national Bible societies as well as from other recognized translation agencies, and translation studies students and scholars. The seminar also welcomes practicing literary, media, and technical translators who are regularly engaged in projects that cross these fields. Beyond the seminar itself, the Nida School will promote publishable research and ongoing investigation in translation theory as it pertains to the work of Bible Translation and biblical scholarship.
